Wot, no commentary?

Well as ever, for those of you not familiar with the L&CPU folios, there was a wide range of slides along with a wider range of quality.

Caution! Wigan 10 rant

I thought the Wigan 10 slides were particularly dire this time. I remember when the society first got the folios and I saw the Wigan 10 work for the first time, I was impressed. Impressed at the print quality, the sharpness, the colours, the compositions. Impressed enough to think I could aim for that level of competence.

What impressed me about this collection from the Wigan 10 was the fact that they appear to be entirely oblivious to the fact that they are producing crosscut shredder material. It was awful, far below the quality of other work from the folio. I know the Wigan elite like to set the trends and push other clubs to copy their style but I sincerely hope this shoddy digital work does not take a foothold in club photography.

It seems to me that their contributions lacked any coherence, any underlying idea which connects their work, as it has in the past.
OK why am I going on about them so much? Well we are told that these are the creme of the club circuit, but after the assault they put on my eyes I dispute that.
I also know that our own society does not have a strong entry into the L&CPU competitions and as such we do not find our own members work getting the wider circulation it deserves, so come on lets get our stronger membership to put a slide entry together. I know we can surpass the work we have seen in the slide folio, so lets enter some and get our work mercilessly slagged off on some forum somewhere :D

Rant ends
It goes something like this......
Take picture, scan picture, manipulate picture, print picture, "tut" over picture while shaking head, rip picture up and start again.

I did not see this folio so can't comment except to say that the "slides" would very probably not be quite what they seem. I am pretty certain that Wigan Ten members don't load transparency material into their cameras!!

Slides made from digital images. This is what it has come to, and it is sad to think that the format always refered to by an old LCPU stalwart (David Marsh) as "the little gems" can be used as another way to generate more awards.

All digital workers can have slides made fron their digital files. The fact that most do not is at least an encouraging thought.

David.

I enjoy the folios because I think it is good to see what is being created outside our little F&DPS world. However, I am often dissappointed by the quality of many of the images in them. Now don't get me wrong; I'm not suggesting that there aren't lots of great photographs out there - more that I don't feel they are always represented in the folios. I have a problem with a scoring technique that is based on an instant response. Subtle images don't stand a chance and I believe a good photograph is something you can 'live with'.

Phil, I think that thought is shared by many of us. The LCPU would probably agree as well but the answer is always that with many hundreds of entries to look at and limited time there is no other way to get through the judging. So impact wins every time and a lot of good work is rejected - even in our club.
